Change Management – The People Side of Change

Change Management – The People Side of Change

It is the systematic approach and application of knowledge, tools and resources to deal with successfully implementing change. This means that change management involves defining and adopting the appropriate business strategies, procedures, structures, and technologies to manage the change to sustain the desired outcome(s) for the business as a whole. Ultimately, change management focuses on how to help people engage, adopt, and use a change in their day-to-day work.

Numerous companies have learned over the past several years or so that change management needs to be recognized as both a process and a competency. The Change Management Institute (https://change-management-institute.com/), a global not-for-profit association devoted to the certification and further development of change management professionals, provides clear steps for the change management process which are:

Defining the change

Analyzing the impact of the change on people

Designing the mechanisms to implement the change with those impacted

Aligning people to the change

Tracking progress to the change to coach improvements.

In addition, CMI drives credibility for folks being competent in managing the change methodology through accreditation.

By now, your company may have been exposed to numerous organizations offering change management services. But the real question is “has your organization realized that without a standard well developed change management process and competent individuals to execute the process that the people adoption of change 🫂 to realize the value desired is always delayed and in some cases wiped away?”

Sample situations letting you know that your change management practices are poor include:

⁉️ Users are not clear on what to do after project launch

⁉️ People have been trained repeatedly and still cannot perform the work

⁉️ Senior stakeholders believe your product or service is not performing as expected

⁉️ The Future State was not well defined thus KPI performance is low

⁉️ Your organization is experiencing a flurry of client complaints after go-live.

Where is your company on its change management journey? 🤔

ITIL Change Management Clarification: ITIL Change Management is designed to mitigate risk for a systems change in support of IT Operations. It does not address nor manage the “people adoption mindset” needed for a change to be successfully integrated into the daily work of an individual. 📝
